When a second opinion makes sense
Many people have been in treatment for a while without feeling much better. Others have received a diagnosis that doesn't quite fit, or are taking several medications without being sure why. A psychiatric second opinion is a fresh, independent review of your situation by an experienced psychiatrist.
Consider a second opinion if:
- You've tried two or more medications without enough improvement
- Side effects are making treatment hard to continue
- You're taking several psychiatric medications and want to know if all are still needed
- You're unsure about a diagnosis, such as depression versus bipolar disorder, or anxiety versus ADHD
- Your symptoms have changed and your treatment hasn't
- A family member's care has stalled and you want another perspective
Why experience matters
Dr. Harvey J. Green is a board-certified psychiatrist with more than 40 years of medical experience. He trained in adult and child and adolescent psychiatry at the Menninger School of Psychiatry. Decades of practice mean he has seen how conditions evolve, how medications interact, and how often an overlooked factor holds treatment back. Common culprits include sleep problems, substance use, a medical condition, or a missed diagnosis.
What the review includes
- A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation
- A careful review of past diagnoses, treatments, and medication history
- A review of prior records, with your permission
- Clear recommendations, which may include changing doses, simplifying a regimen, trying a different medication class, adding psychotherapy, or confirming your current plan is on track
Consultation or ongoing care
Some patients want a one-time consultation, with recommendations shared with their current provider. Others choose to transfer their care to Dr. Green for ongoing medication management and psychotherapy. Either path is welcome.
