What is medication management?
Psychiatric medication management is the ongoing process of choosing, starting, adjusting, and monitoring medications for mental health conditions. Starting a prescription is only the first step. Good medication management means checking whether the medicine is working, watching for side effects, adjusting the dose, and knowing when to change course or taper off.
Dr. Green's approach
Dr. Green is a board-certified psychiatrist with more than 40 years of medical experience. His prescribing philosophy is careful and conservative:
- Accurate diagnosis first: medication choices begin with a thorough evaluation.
- Lowest effective dose: enough to help, without unnecessary side effects.
- Plain-language explanations: what the medication does, how long it takes, and what to watch for.
- Whole-person care: other medications, medical conditions, sleep, and substance use are all considered.
- More than a prescription: medication is often combined with insight-oriented psychotherapy, which can improve results.
Medications Dr. Green manages
Depending on your diagnosis and needs, treatment may involve:
- Antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, bupropion, and others) for depression and anxiety
- Stimulant and non-stimulant medications for ADHD
- Mood stabilizers and atypical antipsychotics for bipolar disorder
- Medications that reduce cravings and support recovery from alcohol and substance use
- Carefully selected options for sleep problems
What follow-up visits look like
Follow-up visits are typically shorter than the first evaluation. They focus on how you're feeling and functioning, side effects, and whether to adjust. Some medications require periodic lab work, such as lithium levels or metabolic monitoring, and Dr. Green coordinates that as needed. Many follow-ups can be done by telehealth for Minnesota residents.
